Are You Leading, or Just Keeping Everything Running?
Oct 7, 2026
Holding it all together isn't the same as leading
You're already doing the work. Answering emails, putting out fires, keeping things moving, and somehow holding it all together.
But when's the last time you stopped to ask how you're actually doing as a leader? Not as the person keeping everything running. As the leader of the people around you.
Most of us never do. There's always something more urgent. So I built a simple way to check in: the Leadership Success Scorecard. It takes about five minutes, and there are no wrong answers.
Five areas, starting with you
The scorecard looks at your whole leadership picture, not just one piece. It starts at the centre and works outward:
You: how you lead yourself, your boundaries, your energy and how you show up when no one's watching.
Others: how you lead the people around you, one relationship at a time. It's about impact, not intention.
Team: the culture you're building together. Culture is what happens when you're not in the room.
Organization: whether what you say you value matches what you actually reward.
Community: the footprint your business leaves outside its own walls. Your walls end. Your impact doesn't.
It doesn't matter if you're the owner, the operator or the manager. Every leader is leading in all five places, whether they think about it or not.
How it works
In each area, you'll rate four short statements, like "I have clear boundaries around my time and energy."
Then comes the part I find most revealing: a real-life scenario. It's easy to rate ourselves generously on a statement. It's harder when the question is what you actually do.
What do you do when an urgent client message lands at dinner on a Thursday night? When a team member misses a deadline for the second time this month? When your top performer hits every number but is short with everyone around them?
Those moments tell you more than any rating ever could.
Start where you're lowest
When you're done, you'll see a score for each of the five areas, and the one that's lowest right now.
That's not a weakness to fix alone. It's the most useful place to start a real conversation.
And there's no graduation here. You don't finish leading yourself and move on to your team. You're always leading in all five places at once, and any one of them can drift out of alignment when life gets busy. That's normal. The point is to notice.
Take five minutes for yourself
The Leadership Success Scorecard is free. Be honest with yourself. Answer for how things actually are, not how you'd like them to be.
If your results stir something and you'd like to go deeper, check out our live sessions. You'll find them on the Class Schedule page of our website.
